CAMPBELL Newman is under pressure to force controversial LNP treasurer, Barry O’Sullivan, out of the party after his expletive-laden tirade at a candidate.

Senior MPs and party figures are demanding Mr Newman act now or risk the party’s bosses taking over, if the LNP wins the election.

The widening schism between the LNP partyroom and the organisation comes after The Courier-Mail yesterday revealed a recording of Mr O’Sullivan browbeating the party’s former Cairns candidate, Paul Freebody.

Between Mr Sullivan’s attacks on Mr Freebody in which he compares him to “lifting a dead body”, the Cairns businessman can be heard saying “you have cut me to pieces”.

Senior LNP figures yesterday described Mr O’Sullivan’s tactics as “disgusting”, “vile” and “pathetic”, detailing their own experiences with the former Queensland detective.

Mr Freebody plans to launch a website detailing his experience in the LNP.

Business and public sector leaders said if the tirade was made in their industries, the perpetrator would be suspended or sacked.

LNP president Bruce McIver said he was unaware what happened in candidate review interviews but admitted Mr Sullivan’s actions in this case had been “overly robust”.

“We do this to ensure that candidates of the highest calibre are put forward to the people of Queensland.”

However, one senior MP described Mr McIver’s claims of ignorance as “total crap”, saying Mr O’Sullivan was hand-picked by the president.

Between filling sandbags in rain-drenched Cairns, Mr Newman said he agreed with Mr McIver but it was a matter for the president to deal with.

He promised clear lines of authority between the parliamentary and organisational wings of the party.

Today The Courier-Mail can reveal the member for Coomera Michael Crandon was forced to sign an undated letter of resignation by the party organisation after he failed to disclose details about a family matter in his candidate application form.

The organisation’s heavy-handed tactics will draw comparisons with former premier Joh Bjelke-Petersen forcing his ministers to sign undated resignation letters.

Mr Crandon did not return calls while LNP state director Michael O’Dwyer declined to comment.
