Campbell Newman and wife Lisa won’t cut ties to family firms

CAMPBELL Newman and his wife will not cut ties with family-run companies despite weeks of distracting revelations about their financial interests.

Queensland’s Liberal National Party leader lodged a new pecuniary register detailing his financial holdings and those of his family, as the Bligh government yesterday unveiled beefed-up regulations to publicly release interest registers for the partners of all Queensland parliamentarians.

Following weeks of damaging reports drip-fed into the public domain, Mr Newman yesterday said he had “disclosed everything” and he was ready to “get on now and deal with the issues that confront this state”.

But he said family members would not stand aside from some of their positions on family trusts and companies due to “significant legal and financial issues”.

“We’ve decided not to do that,” Mr Newman said yesterday. “I think the best way, though, is to make sure we always declare these things and keep those registers updated.”

Last month The Australian revealed a company established by Mr Newman’s brother-in-law, Seb Monsour, sought a $30 million a year contract to supply services to the Queensland Reconstruction Authority after the summer floods. Mr Newman’s wife Lisa was originally listed as a company director.

Last week The Courier-Mail published details of two Port Douglas properties held by Frome Holdings, of which Mr Newman is a non-voting shareholder, that were not disclosed during his time as Brisbane lord mayor.

This prompted Deputy Premier Andrew Fraser to refer Mr Newman’s disclosures while Brisbane lord mayor to the Crime and Misconduct Commission. Yesterday Mr Fraser accused Mr Newman of being dragged “kicking and screaming” to the disclosure.

Mr Newman also declared a controlling interest or shareholding in Ultrex Consulting Services, which in turn had a shareholding in Aquosus Australia. He said he had not received any income from the companies.

Mr Newman made a submission about his wife Lisa’s financial interests but blamed the Bligh government for attacking his family.

“I don’t think anything could have prepared my family for this onslaught,” he said. “They’re very upset. I have no sort of embarrassment in saying this, they are very upset about what has happened. They have been dragged through barbed wire and broken glass by Anna Bligh and Labor.”
