Campaigns kick off for Syrian parl. vote

On Sunday, Assistant Interior Minister for Civil Affairs Brigadier General Hassan Jalali said that 14,788,644 citizens were eligible to vote in People’s Assembly’s elections slated to be held on May 7.

The vote is part of President Bashar al-Assad’s constitutional reforms pledged earlier, which authorized multi-party elections. Voters will be able to choose between 250 lawmakers for the first such parliament.

“We decided to create an opposition party inside Syria. We do not acknowledge opposition groups outside Syria. Our party is running for the elections to participate in the political and social life in the country, and work for the benefit of the Syrians and the homeland,” Zaher Zimbarakji, a parliamentary election candidate, told Press TV.

On Saturday, people held another massive rally in the capital Damascus to express support for the government.

The demonstrators also blamed Western powers for the unrest in Syria and condemned all forms of foreign intervention in the country.

Syria has been experiencing the unrest since mid-March 2011. The violence has claimed the lives of hundreds of people, including many security forces.

Damascus blames ‘outlaws, saboteurs, and armed terrorist groups’ for the unrest, asserting that it is being orchestrated from abroad.

The West and the Syrian opposition, however, accuse the government of killing protesters.
