nsnbc : British Prime Minister David Cameron and former Culture Secretary Tessa Jowell attempted to recreate The Beatles’ famous “Abbey Road” album cover during a visit to the music studios to meet performers who are supporting the EU referendum “Remain” campaign.
The visit and the photo-op and video (see below) happened on Friday, ahead of the referendum on Britain’s EU membership on June 23. Cameron and Jowell also got a taste of life (studio) music, sitting in the gallery and listening to a performance.
“… Leading people from our great creative industries (have) put forward such a powerful case as to why the creativity of this country, the creative industries of this country are stronger in Europe,” Jowell said.
More than 250 British celebrities from the arts world, including actors Benedict Cumberbatch and Helena Bonham Carter, have signed a letter urging Britons to vote to stay in the block.
Some Beatles and especially some John Lennon aficionados responded with disgruntled comments about sacrilege. Correct, “Sir” Paul McCartney is indeed considered to be “pretty conservative”, but McCartney was the only one depicted on the Abbey Road album cover who wasn’t wearing shoes or socks. Cameron did.
Many John Lennon fans, for their part, would say that Lennon’s eternal sleep would be invaded by nightmares seeing what Lennon probably would consider as a war criminal trying to profit on his work and image. The EU is definitely not what Lennon meant in his song Imagine, when he sang “Imagine there’s no country, it isn’t hard to do, nothing to kill and to fight for, and no religion too”. It ain’t worth a thing cause you ain’t got that swing, Cameron.
Rumors have it that Lennon’s ghost will come to haunt Prime Minister Cameron in his sleep, whispering into his ears the words give peace a chance, and the quote from former French Foreign Minister Roland Dumas who went on the record, saying that top-British officials had asked him in 2009, two years before the eruption of the war in Syria, whether he wanted to participate in ousting the Syrian government with the help of “rebels”.
Other rumors have it that Lennon also whispers into Cameron’s ear “Too late, you have left already. Germany, France, Ukraine and Russia left you and your special Atlantic partner sit out in the cold when they gave peace a chance and negotiated the Minsk Accord that led to the ceasefire in Ukraine”. Others again recall the lyrics from I am the Walrus “See how they smile, like pigs in a sty, see how they snide, I’m crying”.
