Perhaps unsurprisingly, it didn’t pull in the crowds.

Surrounded by 7,000 empty seats, Prime Minister David Cameron hosted a Cabinet meeting in the handball arena at the Olympic Park in Stratford, East London yesterday.

Sitting around a series of trestle tables, ministers discussed the legacy of the Games as they marked 200 days until the opening ceremony in July – by which time, of course, the multi-coloured seats will be in much greater demand.

Ministers travelled to the site on a
high-speed Olympic Javelin shuttle train from St Pancras station in
central London.

Mr Cameron encouraged them to exploit the opportunities
the Games will offer, before touring the 17,500-capacity aquatics centre
with London mayor Boris Johnson, Culture Secretary Jeremy Hunt and Lord
Coe, chairman of the London 2012 organising committee.

20-MILE VIEW FROM TOWER ‘WILL COST A FAMILY £60’

Ministers say the Orbit – the artistic centrepiece of the Olympic Park – will be ‘the next London Eye’ and rake in £10million a year from visitors after this summer’s Games.

At 374ft, the ArcelorMittal Orbit is the UK’s tallest sculpture and will attract a million tourists a year, the Government claims. Ticket prices are ‘under discussion’ but a visit could cost a family of four up to £60.

Steel magnate Lakshmi Mittal contributed £19.6million of the cost, with the remaining £3.1million coming from the Government, which will own the building.

More than half the population are not excited about the Games, according to a poll. ComRes research also reveals that 67 per cent nationwide disagree that the Olympics will benefit the lives of people in their area.

They chatted to diver Tom Daley, who is tipped to win gold at the Games.

The 17-year-old revealed he enjoys getting up early to complete his
demanding training schedule, which takes up to six hours a day.

He said:
‘It’s great, I get to dive before everyone else. It’s quite pressurised
if you have to dive when everyone else is here as well.’

Mr Cameron told him: ‘I expect you’ve got to use quite a bit of nerve to jump off there.’

After the meeting, Mr Cameron urged critics of the Olympics to ‘stop
grumbling’.

He insisted that ‘the whole country can benefit from the
legacy of the Games’, with a significant boost to the economy coming
from a conference in July.

Executives from Google, Goldman Sachs, GlaxoSmithKline, Vodafone and
Nissan are among those due to attend the biggest business conference
ever seen, which will be held at Lancaster House in London.

Mr Cameron
said: ‘This summer’s Olympics will put the eyes of the world on Britain
as we host not just an unparalleled sporting spectacle, but also a
chance for companies from across the globe to interact and do business
here in the UK.

‘We expect these events to generate at least £1billion for British
businesses and they are vital to our efforts to secure a long-term
return to sustainable growth.’

The Prime Minister also unveiled plans to allow people to hold weddings and corporate events at the handball arena.

Glad we paid for these freeloaders to carry out this pointless excercise

How pathetic and what a waste of money. Anything for a “publicity stunt”! Just get on with the business in hand and don’t waste time having these photo opportunities.

No seats taken there then, was this location to avoid E.U. spies.?

‘Mr Cameron urged ministers to exploit the opportunities offered by this summer’s event.’
Don’t worry, Dave, they will do. Best seats for all the major events as freebies, renting out their second homes in the capital for a few bob as well.

Who is that guy sitting to Cameron’s left? I recognise William Hague but who is the person between them?

These silly stunts will not persuade the majority of people that the Olympics is worthwhile so he is just was wasting time and money. Cabinet meetings should be at no 10 and sports halls used for sport.

“Mr Cameron urged ministers to exploit the opportunities offered by this summer’s event”. LOL! Don’t panic Dave, for I am sure that both ministers – politicians in general, are already well advanced in the process of “exploiting the opportunities offered” to the full.

What attention seeking rubbish! Surely you have more pressing matters to deal with “Dave”?

comical but not very funny, just trying to justify this white elephant

And just how much did this publicity stunt cost? Travelling time? Catering? Chauffeur driven cars? Security? All for an overpriced sport-day.
