A 15 kilometre tower of light has ignited debate in Hobart about the prospect of keeping the artwork in the city.

49 military-strength floodlights make up the Spectra tower that projects light up to 15 kilometres into the air.

The work is in Hobart as part of the city’s inaugural winter arts festival Dark MoFo.

Tasmanian arts advocate Ross Honeywill says an online campaign to keep the piece is gaining momentum.

“It fits in perfectly with the growing reputation of Hobart,” he said.

“Sydney has the Opera House or even the bridge, but Hobart has the opportunity of having something that is a uniquely Hobart symbol.”

“An image of the light, the light in the south and I think it is a very strong concept,” he said.

But Dark MoFo organiser Leigh Carmichael says it is unlikely artist Rhoji Ikeda would sell it.

“We had to negotiate for months just to let it be allowed to run for the full length of the festival,” he said.

The Spectra light tower will shine every night until Dark MoFo ends on Saturday.
