There has been a call for more media regulation and a suggestion of more independent media funded by the government.
Eric Beecher, the publisher of commentary website Crikey, has told an independent inquiry into the media, that self-regulation is not working.
The inquiry was called after the UK phone-hacking scandal and is chaired by former federal court judge Ray Finkelstein QC.
It has been told by La Trobe University’s Robert Manne and Deakin University’s Martin Hirst that they have come across many instances of political bias, particularly in News Limited papers, and they believe the company’s 70 per cent dominance in the market has an adverse impact on democracy.
