Public transport in Kings Cross should be overhauled and more CCTV cameras installed on the streets to help curb alcohol-fuelled violence in the area, a community forum has been told.
The forum, held on Wednesday night at the Kings Cross Hotel in the heart of the notorious neon-lit strip of pubs and clubs, comes after the “king hit” death of Thomas Kelly, 18, last month.
Mr Kelly was walking in the precinct with his girlfriend and talking on his mobile phone when he was struck in an unprovoked attack, later dying in hospital.
Kieran Loveridge, 18, has been charged with his murder.
Sydney Lord Mayor Clover Moore told the packed forum of around 100 local residents that big changes were needed to public transport in the Cross, especially on Friday and Saturday nights.
“The one thing that everyone agrees on is that between 1am and 4am there’s no transport and we have about 20,000 people on the street,” said Ms Moore, who is also the independent state MP for Sydney.
“They’ve been drinking … and tempers flare and we know the result.
“That’s the situation now and government is addressing that.”
She said she expected a decision from the state government on how to address violence in the area “quite soon”.
Andrew Gibbs, the chief executive of Solotel Hotel Group which runs a number of pubs in the area, said more council CCTV cameras were needed.
“The police rely heavily on us and other venues for CCTV,” he told the forum.
“Over the Thomas Kelly matter the venues provided the evidence (to police) because unfortunately there was just not the resources on the street in the form of council operated CCTV.”
In a sometimes heated question and answer session one local resident said management of the area had failed completely.
“It’s a zoo, it’s not a managed area,” he said to a mix of cheers and boos.
FBI radio president Cassandra Wilkinson said Kings Cross was “safer, friendlier and more civilised” than it had been for decades.
She called on authorities not to overreact to the Thomas Kelly tragedy.
The forum was told there were around 80 serious incidents on the average weekend in Kings Cross.
