San Jose, California – A video posted to Facebook of 22-year-old Juan Moreno Lopez being violently restrained and beaten by several officers during his arrest Saturday has sparked an investigation into the officers actions.

Internal affairs at the San Jose Police Department will investigate the actions of the officers as they determine if they went too far while making an arrest.

The cellphone video is shaky and dark, but you can see a man on the ground with two San Jose police officers above him, then one officer waves. Several more officers come into frame and at one point the 6 officers surrounding Mr. Lopez are beating him with fists, batons and kicks.

Police say two officers approached Lopez while he was walking on Story Road, east of White Road at about 8:45 at night on May 2.

They say Lopez ran into the middle of the intersection, then turned toward them in a combative manner attacked one officer with a bottle and engaged both officers in a fight.

San Jose police say Lopez continued to resist even after he was handcuffed. Paramedics helped put Moreno Lopez onto a gurney and strapped him down, police said.

Mr. Lopez was taken to an area hospital where he was evaluated and treated before being booked into Santa Clara County Jail on suspicion of assault with a deadly weapon, resisting arrest, being under the influence of a stimulant, possession of methamphetamine and destruction of evidence.
