California holds first-ever Muslim Day

On Monday, California Muslims have gathered at the state capitol to mark the first annual “Muslim Day at the Capitol” event, seeking to promote community engagement in local politics.

The day is meant to engage Muslim voters on a state and federal level, while discussing issues of interest to the Muslim community — including civil rights and immigration — with legislators.

The event follows the launch of the Council on American-Islamic Relations (CAIR) 2012 “Muslims Vote” campaign, encouraging American Muslims to increase their presence in politics and elections.

“We thought it was really important that in addition to bringing staff to speak to legislators, that we bring community members, the actual voters in their districts, to say we are here; we want to amplify our voices and our votes and talk to you about the issues that matter to us,” says Zahra Billoo, executive director for CAIR in San Francisco.

Experts say that Muslim voters could play a decisive role in swing states during the presidential election this November, also warning against some people who have attempted to diminish the role that Muslims play in American politics.

“Presidential, congressional elections — there are people who are pushing the Muslim boogeyman as one way of advancing their political careers or getting some right wing votes at the expense of some Muslim communities,” says Hussam Ayloush, executive director for CAIR Los Angeles.

Ayloush says the day helps provide tools to Muslims in the political process, encouraging participants “not to feel victimized, not to allow for this fear-mongering to marginalize us or to make us feel less, or as second-class citizens.”

Muslim Day at the capitol is modeled after a number of other minority communities.
