California foreclosures are up nearly 20 percent compared to the same period last year, which indicates that a record number of people are still losing their homes.
Carlos Marroquin from Occupy Los Angeles and Occupy Fights Foreclosures said Occupy LA has made a lot of progress fighting the housing crisis.
“Every day we get people calling us for help because those programs that are in place are not reaching the people,” he told Press TV.
About 700,000 homeowners hurt by foreclosures in California.
A report from the group Tenants Together shows that one million California renters have been affected as well.
People have held protests in Los Angeles and Sacramento to challenge the banks and the politicians, saying it was Occupy LA who helped California pass a Homeowners Bill of Rights, which gives homeowners more time and more protection.
The Homeowners Bill of Rights takes effect on January 1. Marroquin estimates that leaves more than one million homeowners still in danger of losing their homes.
