Cairns entertainment precinct halted

Cairns Regional Council has formally suspended work on a controversial $160 million entertainment precinct, casting doubt over its future.

The federal and former Queensland governments each committed $40 million to the project, which won approval from the council late last year.

Former premier Anna Bligh also pledged a further $57 million for the project, following the sale of the old Supreme Court site in Brisbane, with the council to fund the balance.

But Premier Campbell Newman said the $57 million was not “on the table” because his government had concerns about the project’s location on port land.

The council voted on Wednesday to suspend work on the precinct, until funding from the federal and state government had been secured.

Newly-elected mayor Bob Manning said the council was keen to create a precinct “in the best interest of the community”.

“We will be meeting with the relevant ministers at both state and federal levels as a matter of urgency and the results of these discussions will be reported to Council,” Mr Manning said.

“At that time, we will have clearer indication of the options that are available to us.”
