A businessman drowned in the Thames after he slipped during a game of ‘hide and seek’ with his girlfriend.

Umer Anjum, 30, had been out drinking with friends just after midnight on the Thames Clipper pier opposite Canary Wharf.

CCTV footage shows Mr Anjum following his girlfriend Linda Kozlovska before falling off a walkway, Southwark Coroner’s Court heard.

Describing the scene caught on tape, PC Steve Moore told an inquest that he saw the businessman clambering over the walkway before it flips or gives way under his weight, dropping him into the river.

PC Moore said: ‘The main piece footage is facing the north end of the pier at 12.20am.  You can see a female come into view walking along the pier and you can see her hide behind the gangplank.

‘You then see Umer coming along the pier on the other side.

‘He climbs over the railing – it looked like they were playing a game of hide and seek.

‘He reaches for the gangplank but it rotates and you see him fall from view. I assume he fell into the water.

‘After about a minute you see the female come along the gangplank, realising he went into the water and diving in after him.

‘There was nothing suspicious about the circumstances, he wasn’t pushed, he wasn’t punched, there wasn’t any issue between them.

‘It looked like they were having fun, just messing about, it was a tragic accident.’

Friends of Mr Anjum threw life aids into the river and wading into the ‘icy’ water in an attempt to rescue them during the incident on June 30.

A helicopter and marine rescue teams were dispatched to the Thames Clipper port and Ms Kozlovska was taken to hospital.

Mr Anjum’s body was found at low tide close to the Hilton Hotel at Nelson Pier the following evening.

Coroner Sarah Ormonde-Walshe said Mr Anjum had been a weak swimmer who suddenly found himself in a stretch of the river with strong currents.

His blood alcohol content was almost twice the drink drive limit.

‘The most important evidence has been provided by the CCTV and their were no suspicious circumstances,’ she said.

‘He was with a group of friends and they were having a drink by the river Thames and possibly he was playing hide and seek with Linda.

‘He went over the railings and grabbed a gangplank with one hand but it flipped down and caused him to lose his footing and fall into the Thames.

‘The current is very strong and it is extremely difficult, even if you can swim to get to the side and save yourself.’

Speaking after the inquest family members said they wanted to speak to Ms Kozlovska because they had never met her before the accident.

Maria Hakim, Mr Anjum’s cousin said: ‘We don’t understand who this mystery figure was.’

Ms Hakim said her cousin was hardworking, outgoing, helpful and respectful of his family and elders.

The verdict of the inquest was accidental death.
