Newcastle business leaders are expected to seek further details today from the Premier, Barry O’Farrell on infrastructure spending outlined in the recent State budget.
The Premier will address a Newcastle Business Club luncheon, preceding a visit to the region tomorrow by the State Treasurer, Mike Baird.
Club president, Kris Leck says businesses want the Premier to clarify spending on individual infrastructure projects in the budget, such as the inner-city University campus.
“I understand it’s been allocated to the Hunter Development Corporation but there hasn’t been too many details of how that’s actually going to be allocated and how that will assist the University,” he said.
“Obviously there’s a significant shortfall which they’re expecting federal Government funding to fill the hole in, but we want to hear a bit more detail about what the Government’s plans were in allocating it to the Hunter Development Corporation.”
Mr Leck says it is likely the inner-city rail issue will be raised again, but members also want a commitment from the Premier to a high-speed rail link between Newcastle and Sydney.
“There’s been significant amounts of studies done but we’re looking for the next step beyond that,” he said.
“I mean it’s going to make a significant impact to the community of Newcastle and we want to see our stretch at least to Sydney being the first link in that.”
Paul Murphy is the Chairman of the business lobby group, Newcastle Alliance, and says the Premier needs to start taking action soon to revitalise the city.
“We’re hearing about a lot of things happening in Sydney but we’re not getting a lot of action and support for our local members up here in the Newcastle area,” he said.
“So I think Barry hopeful may come out with some positive news but if he’s not I’m the people at the lunch and people in general will be pretty disappointed about the performance if we don’t get some action shortly.”
But the Opposition Leader, John Robertson says Newcastle business leaders should not get their hopes up that the Premier will start delivering on commitments to the region.
“A lot of businesspeople will continue to be frustrated in this region, just like they are elsewhere in New South Wales by Barry O’Farrell,” he said.
“We’ve got a government that’s been in office for almost six months and the only announcements they make are the establishment of committees or inquires.
“This is a government that said they were ready to govern, they ought to get on with actually building it.”
