A bushfire that was threatening homes and lives in Western Australia’s southwest has been contained.
The blaze ran out of control on Tuesday afternoon and began bearing down on residents in the shires of Donnybrook-Balingup and Nannup, about 270km south of Perth.
People northwest of Ellis plantation in the area surrounding the Nannup-Balingup Road from Wrights Bridge, east of Cundinup Road, south of the Cundinup-Kirup Road and north of Agg Road were told to either flee or prepare to defend their homes.
But at 6.30pm (WST) authorities said the fire was contained.
“The fire is now contained, however there are still unburnt pockets and smouldering embers within the containment lines,” the Department of Environment and Conservation said in a statement.
“The fire has burnt about 200ha.”
There were no reports of any injuries.
The bushfire warning was downgraded to a “watch and act” alert.
Firefighters are now set to spend the night battling the blaze and consolidating containment lines.
Four fixed-wing water bombers and one helicopter are helping ground crews on Tuesday afternoon.
