‘Bush, Cheney must be tried as criminals’

Former US Vice-President Dick Cheney has canceled a trip to Canada after his security advisers deemed his visit too dangerous.

Cheney’s last visit to Canada, in September 2011, had sparked angry demonstrations with protesters demanding his arrest for alleged war crimes.

Press TV has conducted an interview with Joshua Blakeney of Veterans Today to further discuss the issue.

The following is a transcription of the interview.

Press TV: Let’s talk about the significance of this in that Cheney felt threatened enough to even cancel his visit.

Blakeney: Yes, it’s highly significant. In the year 2000, the Canadian Parliament enshrined the Crimes Against Humanity and War Crimes Act (CAHWCA) which is unambiguous to those even suspected of having participated in war crimes or crimes against humanity, let alone having concepted them in their memoirs as Dick Cheney and George Bush have, are completely inadmissible to Canada. They’re not allowed in the country.

And if they do step foot in Canada, this law states they must be apprehended. Now, in March 2009, George W. Bush came to Canada on his first visit to a foreign country without diplomatic immunity.

In January 2009, Cheney and Bush lost their diplomatic immunity and this was a test case in the world, and the Canadian government afforded impunity to George W. Bush in that occasion.

And actually right here in the city of Calgary, my friend attempted a citizen’s arrest on George Bush. And since then, what started with a group of protesters here in Calgary in 2009 has waltzed into this mass movement in Canada which reared its head on September 26th when Dick Cheney visited the Vancouver Club in Vancouver.

Dick Cheney’s agent has made this statement that he is concerned about his security and, therefore, won’t visit Canada. The propaganda media outlets here in Canada are trying to portray this as he’s scared of protesters even though he has body guards who are armed with guns.

I think that he’s actually scared of the law enforcers in Canada, that actually there are political forces in Canada who are angry with the incumbent regime here for affording impunity and abrogating Canadian law.

You talk to quite ordinary people in the street here in Canada who are non-political, who are a-political and they know that if the law was being enforced and being enforced consistently and equitably that Dick Cheney and George Bush would be inadmissible to Canada, and Benjamin Netanyahu for that matter.

So there are vested interests that want to have a situation where there is the rule of law for working class people, but the elite are kind of above the law – that if you’re from Texas, from Washington, from Tel Aviv, you don’t have the law applied to you.

But many Canadians aren’t happy with that. In fact, in Canada, in the last election we had a left-wing socialistic party win many seats in the Canadian Parliament and their immigration policy in the Canadian Parliament has come out and said that Dick Cheney and George Bush are inadmissible to Canada.

So I think that this is highly significant. I think that his concern has nothing to do with what the media are saying here in Canada, that it’s the thuggish violent protesters that could hurt Dick Cheney. I think he’s actually concerned with immigration officials apprehending him.

Press TV: How likely would that even be the case, do you think, given the clout and the pull that Dick Cheney or George W. Bush or, as you said, Netanyahu have? Would the arrests actually take place? Would they be able to stick charges against them?

Blakeney: Well, as I say, the lead immigration critic in the Canadian Parliament, who is leading the opposition in the Canadian Parliament, has come out and said if they step foot in Canada they must be apprehended.

We have a group of jurists in Canada who formed the group Lawyers Against War who every single time Bush of Cheney tried to enter Canada they informed the relevant authorities, that it’s their legal obligation.

Of course, these are the people who kidnapped the Canadian child soldier Omar Khadar, dragged him off the Guantanamo Bay, tortured him, apprehended him with non habeas corpus, and this illegal.
