Bus plunges into gorge in India, 18 die

The accident occurred on Saturday near the Keifang village, close to the border with Myanmar and more than 100 kilometers (60 miles) from the state capital, Aizwal, the official, L.R. Sailo told Reuters.

“Seventeen people died on the spot and a 10-year boy died in the hospital,” Sailo said by telephone from Aizwal.

On June 16, at least 32 people were killed and more than 20 others injured when a bus plunged off a bridge in the country’s western state of Maharashtra.

India has the highest annual road death toll in the world, according to the World Health Organization. Most of the accidents are blamed on reckless driving, old vehicles, and poorly-maintained roads.
