Members of Unite, the Britain and Ireland’s biggest, union expressed their anger at their workload and payment during the Olympic events by voting for strike action.
“The strength of the vote in favour of strike action demonstrates both the anger felt and determination of our members across the entire bus network to achieve a fair and justifiable settlement to this dispute,” said the Unite in a statement posted on its official website.
Bus drivers are demanding a £500 bonus for their work during the London Olympics as they would be the only London transport workers who are denied Olympics bonus payment, with workers on London Underground, London Overground, Docklands Light Railways, Network Rail and Virgin receiving bonuses from £500 to £900.
“It’s a disgrace that London’s mayor, Boris Johnson, and the bus companies have allowed this dispute to get this far. Our members are only asking for an extra £17 a day which will just about buy you a pint of beer and a portion of fish and chips at the Olympics,” said Peter Kavanagh, the Unite regional secretary for London.
London bus drivers’ threat to take strike action comes as 800,000 extra passengers are to travel on buses during the Olympic events.
