Bulimba poll count goes down to the wire

Bulimba looks to be the only uncertain result from last week’s Queensland election, as the Electoral Commission of Queensland began declaring winners.

The Liberal National Party (LNP) remained on track to win 78 of the state’s 89 seats, while Labor looked like winning seven, leaving Katter’s Australian Party and independents with two apiece.

The LNP claimed 47 of the first 48 seats officially declared on Wednesday, after the final postal votes were received on Tuesday.

An ECQ spokesman told AAP that seven seats remained too close to call but ABC election analyst Antony Green said Bulimba was the only seat in any doubt.

Mr Green said the LNP had won Maryborough and Thuringowa, and said former Labor minister Tim Mulherin had just hung on in Mackay.

Media reports on Wednesday suggested KAP was considering requesting a recount in Thuringowa but a party spokesman said that was now unlikely.

Incumbent Maryborough MP Chris Foley said he would wait until all votes were counted before considering his next move.

“I’m still watching things closely … but a recount is still on the cards,” he told AAP.

Mr Green said recounts were unusual in Australian electoral contests.

“Scrutineers will have to put forward an argument for why a vote should be recounted, because they’ve watched every vote being counted,” he said.

“So unless they’ve got a dispute about bundles of votes, then it’s unlikely at those margins of votes.”

With votes counted and preferences distributed in 20 of the eastern Brisbane electorate’s 22 booths, Labor’s Di Farmer maintained a 104-vote lead over the LNP’s Aaron Dillaway, according to the ECQ website.
