Rob Hopkins has been talking about resilience versus sustainability long before my own musings on resilience in a zombie apocalypse or Lloyd’s explorations of resilience in architecture. Crucially, though, he’s done a whole lot more than just talk—having also founded one of the most important social movements of our time.
Transition Towns have been spreading across the Globe like wildfire. Created on the belief that communities can get together to tackle peak oil, climate change and economic meltdown and can even find a path to greater well-being in the process, this movement has captured the imagination of activists from Ireland to Australia to Brazil.
And from the economic regeneration projects of a “transition slum” through massive reforestation efforts to an astounding roster of diverse projects in just one Transition Town, what’s been most remarkable is how each community identifies its own strengths and needs, and then sets about building a plan that is unique to their specific context.
Having interviewed Rob back in 2007, we thought it was high time to have him back on to talk about the state of the Transition Movement, how our challenges have changed since the financial meltdown, and whether resilience is finally becoming the mainstream concern it needs to be.
