Mr Swan said Springsteen shared working class roots with many members of his
Labour party and went on to criticise some of Australia’s
richest business people, mining magnates Clive Palmer, Andrew Forrest and
Gina Rinehart, for using their wealth to try and influence public policy.
“So one tycoon is using his money to challenge the principle of fair taxation
through electioneering. A second is using his money to challenge it through
the Courts. And a third is using her money to challenge it by undermining
independent journalism. In the face of all this we have to stand up and be
heard, because when the massively wealthy buy the loudest megaphones, the
voices of the people are drowned out.”
There were mixed reactions to the speech. Joe Hockey, the shadow treasurer,
said the speech was a bizarre “look-at-me” speech, and Clive Palmer said Mr
Swan was trying to incite a class war.
