Howard government minister Mal Brough will find out on Sunday if he will represent the Liberal National Party (LNP) at the next federal election.
Mr Brough has nominated for preselection for the seat of Fisher on the Sunshine Coast, currently held by sidelined federal parliamentary speaker Peter Slipper.
The LNP’s Queensland president, Bruce McIver, said last month he did not believe Mr Brough’s links with the Slipper harassment case had ruined his chances of preselection.
Mr Brough is alleged to have conspired against Mr Slipper, and court documents show extensive contact between him and James Ashby before Mr Ashby lodged sexual harassment allegations against Mr Slipper.
Mr Brough declined to comment to AAP on his preselection or if the Slipper case had hurt his chances, saying, “Preselectors will speak for themselves.”
He was cleared by Queensland’s anti-corruption watchdog and police this week over allegations he had attempted to bribe a Sunshine Coast mayoralty candidate to stand aside for a rival ahead of the April local government elections.
There are eight nominees for Fisher, including Peter Slipper’s former media adviser Richard Bruinsma and the man behind the LNP’s crushing Queensland election win, James McGrath.
The other nominees are Andrew Wallace, Peta Simpson, Graeme Mickelberg, Daniel Purdie and Stephen Ainscough.
The LNP’s candidate for the Brisbane seat of Lilley, which is currently held by Treasurer Wayne Swan, will be announced on Saturday.
John Cotter Jr, Bill Gollan and Karryn Fletcher will run, as well as Rod McGarvie, who was the LNP’s candidate at the last federal election.
Billionaire mining magnate Clive Palmer had said he was interested in taking on Mr Swan, but he backed away when nominations were called.
