Broome youths accused of raping tourist

Broome police are searching for two youths accused of violently gang raping and robbing a 22-year-old female backpacker in the Kimberley town.

Earvin Jared Hensley Dimer, 18, and Agnes Violet Oliver, 18, appeared in Broome Magistrates Court this morning, each charged with three counts of aggravated sexual penetration and one count of aggravated robbery.

The two local teenagers were remanded in custody to appear again on October 7.

Two other youths believed to take part in the attack on the tourist are being sought by police.

Police said the victim, whose nationality was not revealed, was walking home from Murphy’s Bar on Louis Street at around 2am when she was confronted by four youths near the corner of Anne Street and Tang Street.

Oliver allegedly approached the woman and threatened to kill her with a broken bottle unless she handed over her handbag.

When the woman refused, Oliver allegedly punched the victim in the face, fracturing her cheek and causing her nose to bleed, and then pushed her to the ground before one of the gang stole her handbag.

The victim then chased after the four to recover her passport and other belongings, and was dragged into a nearby park and allegedly repeatedly raped and assaulted.

A passing motorist took the victim to Broome Hospital for treatment.

Oliver and Dimer were arrested this afternoon, but the other two male youths remain at large.

A police prosecutor told Broome Court the group had laughed and tried to take photographs throughout the attack.

Oliver and Dimer were denied bail by the magistrate out of concern they might interfere with police efforts to find the other two youths allegedly involved.
