Bronze Age boat replica sinks

Boat 1550BC was made based of an original vessel found during the construction of an underpass in Dover 20 years ago.

“They had the boat carefully placed in a crane hammock but it filled up straight away,” said a spokeswoman for the project.

“It’s disappointing, but they were so far behind schedule they could not do a test run,” she added.

It took more than three months for a team of specialist archaeologists to build the boat on the Roman Lawns at Dover Museum.

The vessel will be sent to France to be displayed at the multilingual, international exhibition of Beyond the Horizon: Societies of the Channel and North Sea 3,500 Years Ago, which will open in Boulogne-sur-Mer on June 30.

It will then go to Belgium in December and return to Dover in July next year, the spokeswoman announced.

The project is supported by the European Union and involves seven partners from Britain, France and Belgium.
