Brits call for equal rights for Gurkhas

The demonstration comes after Prime Minister David Cameron cancelled the meeting the Gurkhas, ex-Army Gurkha soldiers living in the UK, demanded to deliver a petition against the unfair treatment of the UK government.

Nabina Gurung, a representative from the newly formed campaign group Enough Is Enough, stressed that the members of the advocacy group which is based in Hounslow were supposed to have a short meeting with the PM to discuss the rights of the Gurkhas, who have been denied the right to full pensions and housing support.

However, Gurung said that Cameron cancelled the meeting a fortnight ago. “We did hand over a petition to his secretary. Although we know that there’s greater problems, the problems we are facing are too much to bear. So I hope he reads the petition,” she added.

The Gurkhas, Nepalese soldiers who have been part of the British Army for about 200 years, won a legal battle in 2009 to be able to live in the country, when then home secretary Jacqui Smith came under constant pressure from the activists led by the actress Joanna Lumley.

Nevertheless, since then the Gurkhas continued to demonstrate in opposition to a plan to block the soldiers who retired before July 2007 to join the UK armed forces pensions scheme. The protesters said they only received a third of the pension paid to UK-based soldiers.

“When Joanna Lumley helped this campaign forward, the Gurkhas were given a settlement grant and we were pretty happy with it, but we didn’t know the consequences after getting the settlement,” Gurung said.

“The veterans have come to this country and are suffering a lot. The government is just blindfolded, they’re not willing to treat us as equal as the British soldiers. We want equal rights.”

Several British people also joined the protest to show their sympathy with the case of Gurkhas. Sadia Awanm who was among the protesters, said she was demonstrating in solidarity, as they deserve to be part of the UK, just as the other people.
