‘Britons worried about Olympic security’

The public’s concerns about the safety of the Games have even worsened after the government took last-ditch steps to fill in a security black hole left by G4S private contractor that failed to supply thousands of officers it promised.

According to the Comres poll, 45 percent of Britons believe Britain is poorly prepared for the Olympics while some 40 percent have become more concerned about spectators’ safety after the government was forced to provide an extra 3,500 army forces to secure the Games.

The extra troops were called in last Thursday after G4S accepted it will not be able to supply the 10,000 guards it promised just days before the Games’ opening on July 27.

The G4S fiasco also raised serious questions about the government’s competence in securing the Games after it emerged the police supervisory body the Inspectorate of Constabularies (HMIC) had warned the government last September that they should be ready for “completely normal” situations where firms break their contractual obligations in large projects.
