Britons to protest Trident spending

Protesters have called for a mass rally to be held on the “Budget Day,” 21 March, as they have described the day as the “time to cut Trident.”

Despite unprecedented austerity measures taken by the British government, renewing Britain’s Trident nuclear submarines is to cost British taxpayers £20 billion.

On Wednesday 21 March, Britain’s Chancellor of Exchequer, George Osborne, will make his budget statement. However, ahead of Osborne’s budget statement, the Institute for Fiscal Studies revealed the true scale of the British government’s spending cuts last month.

The report revealed that the scale of cuts has been unprecedented in Britain while no other developed country has attempted such cuts over the past four decades.

However, the British government excluded Trident nuclear submarines from its 2010 Strategic Defence and Security Review, an act which urged the Ministry of Defence to cut its spending.

The independent journalist and blogger, James Bloodworth, described Trident as “a colossal waste of money that will encourage further nuclear proliferation.”

Furthermore, the Methodist Church, the Baptist Union of Great Britain, and the United Reformed Church published a briefing on the costs involved in running and replacing Trident.

The churches revealed in their statement, entitled “Better off without Trident,” that the nuclear submarines would cost British taxpayers £55 billion over the next 15 years.

“Each year for 15 years, Trident will cost the UK £3.7 billion. For the same amount, the Government could invest in: 15,000 more health visitors; 15,000 more teachers; 300 Sure Start centres; 12,500 new council houses per year; solar energy for 345,000 council houses and still leave an additional billion pounds available to support our troops. The three Churches are encouraging people to make the case against Trident to their MPs,” said the churches in their statement.
