Britons arrested on terror suspicions

Anti-terror officers arrested the three men, who are all from Birmingham, on Friday at the airport in London after they arrived on a flight from Oman.

“Three men from Birmingham were arrested last night on suspicion of possessing articles and documents with intent to use them for terrorist purposes overseas,” the West Midlands Police said in a statement.

“All were detained at Heathrow Airport after arriving on a flight from Oman.”

Last week, officers from West Midlands Counter Terrorism Unit went to Oman to probe the case and mediate with the Asian country’s authorities before planning to arrest the men as they arrived in the British capital.

The operation was intelligence led and the arrests came under Section 57 of the Terrorism Act 2000, the force said.

It was not yet clear why the men went to Oman, but the police said the arrests were not made in reply to immediate threats to the public safety.
