DUBAI, United Arab Emirates (AP) — The British Embassy in the United Arab Emirates says a Briton has been sentenced to death in the Gulf nation after he was convicted in a drug-dealing case.
An embassy spokeswoman said Tuesday the mission “is in close contact with the British national … and is providing the appropriate consular assistance.” She spoke on condition of anonymity in line with embassy policy.
Local newspapers reported that two unnamed men were convicted on charges of selling 20 grams (nearly three quarters of an ounce) of marijuana and sentenced by the criminal court in Abu Dhabi the previous day.
Websites of newspapers the National and 7 Days reported they were a 21-year-old Briton and a 19-year-old Syrian.
Emirati court and justice ministry officials gave no details. The Syrian Embassy couldn’t be reached.
