British women to hold anti-cuts demo

The Million Women Rise coalition will hold its fifth annual march and rally in central London to warn ministers not to continue their attack on vital services and instead tackle violence against women, the daily Morning Star reported.

“Nothing has changed since our first march in 2008,” activist Nina Kelly told the paper.

“If anything, things are getting worse as existing services such as rape crisis and refuge centers are being decimated and pulled apart by this government’s funding cuts”, she added.

Kelly said that the cuts will cost lives and end up costing more than they save.

“It’s laughable to think this will save public money,” she said, noting that domestic violence costs Britain millions each year by the burden it puts on the National Health Service (NHS) and social services.

“Ministers need to put their money where their mouth is and protect existing crisis centers if they are serious about tackling domestic violence”, Kelly said.

“The previous Labour government put in place a strategy to address the problem but it is not properly resourced or implemented now”, added the activist.
