British voters punish incumbent govt.

The Labour Party is likely to gain hundreds of the 4,800 local council seats as the results of local elections in the UK are being tallied after polls closed at 21:00 GMT Thursday 3 May.

As of 4:45am GMT on Friday 4 May, the Labour Party had taken control of 20 councils, winning nearly 450 seats with just half of the councils having announced the results.

The Labour Party is expected to gain a 39% national share of the vote, up three points, with the Tories down four on 31%, reported the state-run BBC.

“It’s going to be a bad night for the Conservatives,” said Sayeeda Warsi, co-chairperson of the Conservative Party, after polls closed.

The British media said the incumbent government’s failure to gain considerable votes in the local elections was a direct result of the 2012 budget, which was described as budget prepared by millionaires for millionaires.

Moreover, media reports also said that the results of the elections could be considered as a rejection of the coalition government’s austerity measures.

The election results are a clear indication that British people are angry with their government’s economic policies as the National Institute of Economic and Social Research said the UK unemployment rate would rise to nearly 9% by the end of this year, doing “permanent damage” to the country.
