British transport staff to walk out

Members of the Public and Commercial Services union (PCS) will walk out across the UK, following the government’s announcement in December that it plans to shut the Agency’s offices in England, Wales and Scotland.

Warning that the closures, due by the end of 2013, put up to 1,200 jobs at risk, the union slammed the proposals for removing face-to-face services the offices provided to motor traders and the public.

“We will not sit back and watch while jobs and highly-prized public services are stripped away. Our local economies are crying out for support and investment, not more cuts,” said PCS general secretary Mark Serwotka.

“The closure plans are not based on what the people who use these services say they want and need, but on a politically motivated desire to unpick our public services.”

In a bid to save about £28m a year, the UK Roads Minister Mike Penning claimed the plans to centralize the DVLA would “make dealing with the DVLA easier,” claiming the regional offices are “expensive”.

However, the PCS criticized the proposed office closures for making “no economic sense” and warned that the plans would be “fiercely” resisted, with industrial action very likely.
