British MPs to visit Malvinas Islands

Members of the UK’s Defense Select Committee will make the first such visit in almost a decade and just before the 30th anniversary of the war Britain and Argentina fought over the islands.

“Given that we have a significant military presence in the Falklands… it is only right that the defense committee goes and sees first-hand what taxpayers’ money is being spent on,” said Thomas Docherty, a member of the committee.

James Arbuthnot, the committee’s chairman, had said that Argentina “should be in no doubt” of Britain’s determination to keep the Falklands, boasting that, “If the Falkland Islands were by any chance to be retaken by Argentina, we would take it back.”

Last week, Argentina filed a protest at the UN about Britain’s “militarization” of the region, saying the disputed islands have become “the last refuge of an empire in decline.”

Britain’s Prince William is currently on a military tour to the islands along with a state-of-the-art British destroyer, HMS Dauntless.

Buenos Aires says Britain has increased its military capability around the Malvinas Islands “four-fold” by sending a destroyer and a nuclear submarine.

British officials, however, have refrained from confirming the presence of a nuclear vessel in the region and claim that the warship is just replacing a vessel that was already there.

The Malvinas Islands, located about 300 miles off Argentina’s coast and home to about 3,000 inhabitants, have been “occupied” by Britain since 1833.

However, Buenos Aires claims sovereignty over the archipelago as it controlled the islands prior to their colonization by the UK.
