A British man wanted in connection with a £1million raid on a security van in England 19 years ago was yesterday arrested by U.S. authorities.

‘Fast’ Eddie Maher, 56, was held on immigration charges in Ozark, Missouri, where he is believed to have been working for a cable company under a false name.

Maher, then a security guard, disappeared after the theft from a Securicor van in Felixstowe, in January 1993.

A colleague made a delivery to a branch of Lloyds Bank in the town while Maher allegedly waited outside in the van.

The vehicle vanished and was later found empty on the seafront with 50 bags containing coins and notes worth £1million ($1.5million) missing.

At the time, police believed the money had been transferred to a Toyota Previa spacecruiser with false number plates that had been stolen earlier in London, the East Anglian Daily Times reported.

That car was driven to a car park on
the Landguard peninsula on the Suffolk coast and the money is thought to
have been transferred again to a car that was later found burnt out in
Essex.

From there Maher, an ex-fireman with gambling debts, is believed to have got a flight to Boston.

His girlfriend Deborah Brett and their son Lee, then four, checked into the Boston Buckminster Hotel in Boston the day before the heist took place.

The family are then thought to have adopted a new name and disappeared.

FBI representative Bridgette Patton said the arrest came after Ozark police were informed of ‘a possible fugitive’ in the area.

She said: ‘We were led to believe that individual in question could possibly be Eddie Maher, a fugitive from the United Kingdom.’

Maher’s son Lee King has told American TV that his life has been turned upside down.

He told KSPR News: ‘My dad is one of the nicest guys you’ll meet, he’s only ever done what’s good for us.

‘I just don’t want people to see him in a bad light for something he did 20 years ago. There’s no way he’d ever do this by choice.

‘He wouldn’t just do it to do it, he doesn’t commit crimes, and he’s the one that gets me out of trouble.’

Mr King said his family moved around a lot, but Maher told him it was because of his job.

It is thought he had been living under the name Mike Maher and was living in the Ozark area for the last two years.

During the search for Maher, unconfirmed sightings have been reported in more than 17 countries.

Mr King was told he is in fact two years older than he thought, and is said to have had no knowledge of his father’s alleged criminal past.

At the moment, Maher is being held on immigration charges as the FBI contacts British authorities and Interpol to confirm whether there is still an outstanding warrant for his arrest.

A spokesman for Suffolk Police said: ‘We are liaising with the US authorities regarding the detention of Eddie Maher, who police wish to speak to in connection with a security van robbery in Felixstowe in 1993.’

Be interesting to see if the USA extradition treaty works both ways and they hand him over to us.

It seems that everyone called Eddie has to be ‘steady’ or ‘fast’ Eddie.
I’ve never met a ‘does things at standard speed’ Eddie. Guess it’s a bit long-winded and not catchy enough.

That photo of felixstowe was from 1993, before the dark times, before nu labour

It must be a terrible shock for his son, but, “methinks he doth protest too much”
His father and `mother` appear to have lied to him for the last 15 years and the fact that HE is alive and well in Ozark, Missouri is because of his dad`s cut of a £1 million theft from a security van.
By all means admire, look up to his father, but do it quietly, otherwise you begin to look like an idiot.

My Mum was in the branch when it happened. She said the guard came in, checked everything was OK inside, then went out to collect money from the van, only to come back in looking very confused!

I feel sorry for his son. Changed the family name to “King”. Poor Lee must have been teased mercilessly at school.

Easy money making machine, I would say. I thank you Firozali A.Mulla DBA

His son, Lee King, Interesting name, lets hope he’s not a plumber.

Why do family members interviews ever enter into it? If it was up to them no one would ever be found guilty enough to pay the price!
Murderers, rapists, molesters, thieves, terrorists, bank robbers all have people who swear to the “fact” they are “nice” people.

Just goes to prove yet again that the law has a VERY long memory and has extremely long arm!!!!!
As an ex Detective with Scotland Yard I remember this case well. If the person arrested proves to be “Fast Eddie” then the only thing to say is.
WELL DONE CHAPS!
But can you keep him in prison over there please as he is more likely to get properly punished over there, and we need to make space for terrorists that we cant deport!
