British police are investigating sex abuse allegations against former House of Commons speaker Lord Tonypandy.
Welsh police confirmed that they were investigating allegations of a sexual assault involving the late Lord Tonypandy, then known as George Thomas, which is reported to have occurred in the late 1960s and early 1970s.
A South Wales police spokesman said “It is important that victims have the confidence to come forward and speak to us. We take any allegation involving sexual assault or rape extremely seriously.”
Tonypandy who died in 1997 was a long-standing Speaker of the House of Commons and worked as a teacher before becoming a member of parliament.
The alleged victim, now aged 55, said “I was raped by George Thomas in Cardiff. I was about nine.”
“He spent a lot of time at my house as my parents were good friends with him. Things started small but then got a lot worse. It has been with me all my life,” he added.
Britain has been rocked by a series of pedophile scandals in the last three years, which broke out after the death of the BBC’s former presenter Jimmy Savile, who has been branded as one of UK’s most prolific known sexual predators.
Savile died in 2011 and following his death, hundreds of allegations of sex abuse and rape of minors became public.
Several high-profile figures have been arrested in connection with the multiple investigations into the abuse scandal surrounding the BBC’s former presenter.
British TV presenter Rolf Harris was sentenced to five years and nine months in prison over a string of sexual assaults on girls and young women.
