British head of Indian school sacked and arrested over alleged child abuse

He was an associate of the Royal Institution research body, a fellow of the
British Philosophical Association, and the author of a number of children’s
books published under the pseudonym ‘Professor P.’

The school said he was a ‘master chess player’ and had been described as a “dynamic
English gentlemen with a unique intellect for literature and European
history.”

At the time, he said he was thrilled at the prospect of working with the
school’s “talented students, dedicated parents and very accountable
staff,” but he was dismissed last week by senior colleagues after the
mother of one of his pupils alleged he had propositioned him over the
internet.

“The parents complained that the teacher had used an inappropriate word
with their 14-year-old son [while] chatting on Facebook in August, 2011. The
parents brought the chat as evidence and on their complaint, Paul Francis Meekin
was sacked from his services. The alleged chat between the two took place
after school hours. The parents also approached the local police with a
similar complaint and a police case ct has been filed against him,”
said Biswajeet Bhattacharya, a school spokesman.

Puneet Kumar, of Bangalore Police, who is heading the investigation, said he
had been arrested under India’s Juvenile Justice and Information Technology
Acts. “We have registered a case against him and the investigations are
on. We have confiscated his passport and he has been asked not to leave
Bangalore. He is currently out on bail,” he said.

Dr Meekin was not available for comment.
