‘British girls at risk of rape’

The deputy children’s commissioner, Sue Berelowitz, who is leading the inquiry into street gangs and their assault on young women, said that the victims are often “kidnapped, held at gunpoint and threatened with gang rape.”

She stressed that the girls associated with gang members would all be at very high risk or actually being sexually abused and raped in some shape or form.

“From the conversations we’ve had with individual girls, some of the stories we get are quite heart-rending really in terms of girls being kidnapped, held at gun point, threatened with being, what the public would understand as gang raped,” she added.

Last year, University of Bedfordshire published a report into sexual abuse of children, revealing that three-quarters of England’s child protection boards did not record the exact information on child sexual abuse, making it difficult to assess the real extent of the exploitation.

The university report also found that children were forced or had come under the pressure of older girls who were also victims of peer pressure.

Isha Nembhard, a former gang member, said that majority of the girls did not even consider themselves as victims of abuse.
