British, Dutch begin voting in EU polls

Polling stations have opened for the European parliamentary elections in Britain and the Netherlands.

The elections are scheduled to take place in the European Union’s 28 member states, with a total of the 751 members of the European Parliament (MEPs) due to be chosen.

Nearly 400 million people from across the bloc will vote in the four-day elections.

Voters in Britain and the Netherlands will choose 73 and 26 MEPs respectively.

British voters in England and Northern Ireland will also cast ballots in local council polls to elect representatives for over 4,000 council seats across 161 English local authorities and 462 seats in 11 Northern Irish districts.

The EU elections are expected to see major gains for far-right parties. According to latest surveys, Eurosceptics could win 100 seats in the new parliament, which, if materialized, would triple their number in the 751-seat assembly.

A recent poll by YouGov and the Sun newspaper found that the UK Independence Party (UKIP) is set to win some 27 percent of the vote in the European elections. The party wants Britain’s exit from the EU and plans to reduce the inflow of immigrants.

The Netherlands’ far-right Freedom Party is also expected to win with up to 23 percent of the vote.
