Mr Kim took over as North Korean leader on the death of his father Kim Jong-il
last December. Since then the Swiss-educated leader, who is thought to be
28, has shown signs of being more open to Western culture than previous
leaders of the Stalinist country.
Last month North Korean television showed him at a concert featuring dancers
dressed as Mickey Mouse, Tigger and other Disney characters.
It was announced last month that Mr Kim is married and reportedly has a child.
North Korean media did not show him at the opening of the Arirang Games on
Wednesday. The annual gymnastic and dance display is a tribute to his
grandfather Kim Il-sung. This year’s Arirang Games was opened by the
country’s culture minister, KNCA reported.
A Chinese tour firm that organises trips to the games told South Korean media
this year’s Arirang would be the last.
