Unlike a similar “green on blue” attack on Monday that wounded two ISAF
soldiers in Afghanistan’s northern Faryab Province, in which the gunman was
killed, ISAF has still not been able determine whether the shooter in Herat
was a soldier, policeman or insurgent.
‘Green on blue’ attacks are part of a trend this year in which Afghan security
force trainees or soldiers have been killing Nato troops. Some fear it is a
Taliban strategy aimed at undermining trust between Nato and Afghan forces
as Nato shifts more and more to a solely training mission in Afghanistan
ahead of a planned 2014 withdrawal.
So far this year there have been 26 green on blue killings in Afghanistan.
Earlier this month, three British soldiers were shot and killed at a police
checkpoint in Helmand Province after an argument broke out with local
police.
“The reality is the vast majority of ISAF forces in theatre are partnered with
Afghan National Security Forces. Taken in totality, although tragic, these
attacks are uncommon,” said Maj Crighton.
