It may be the constant surroundings of sugary love messages, or perhaps there is something in the air.

Either way, romance has clearly blossomed at the Love Hearts factory in Derbyshire to the extent that it now claims to be the most lovestruck workplace in Britain.

Of the 500 employees at the factory where the sugar-coated sweets are produced, 122 are in a relationship with each other.

In news conveniently revealed just days before Valentine’s Day, Swizzels Matlow said one in four workers at its factory is in a relationship with another employee there.

The family firm, based in New Mills, North Deryshire, released the figures about its workforce a few days ahead of February 14, arguably the most important selling period for the small sweets.

The company, which also produces Refreshers and Mr Chew sweets, make 200m Love Hearts every year, with each one featuring a trademark message such as ‘I Love you’, or ‘All mine’.

Jeremy Dee, director at Swizzels Matlow, said: ‘One couple even used to pass Love Hearts down the production line to each other before they got chatting in the canteen. Love Hearts clearly inspire romance.’

Mr Dee dismissed the notion that the figures were deliberately released around Valentine’s Day as a cynical ploy to sell more of its famous sweets.

He told the Daily Telegraph: ‘I think it’s a lovely story that so many people met here.

‘We knew anecdotally that many were either married to each other or going out with each other, but we just did a quick ask around to find out how many were together. It’s a very close-knit place.’

Deano, it’s bred. Not bread. They are not sandwich fillings.

Er it’s not because of the factory, it’s the fact it’s New Mills… In breads!!!

Nice story, but in a place that employs many hundreds of people working in close proximity, it is inevitable. My place of work employs over two thousand, I would say that a third of the workplace are in a relationship. But, after 10 years, not me. (cue: Violins………. ). !!!!!!!!!!!!! Maybe one day, you never know.

Stay single lads, they’re cupids poisoned arrows. They must be dipping them in the canal next door.

David, Southampton – Don’t be like that! Loosen up a bit, smile at Simone. You never know! 😉

Pass the sick bucket!

A quickie in the photocopying room does not a relationship make.

Aaaagh! That is so sweet ;0)

It would be interesting to compare that to other factories. Because if you have lots of employees of similar background, spending more time with each other than their friends/family, then the chances are you are going to end up with lots of couples.
