Britain has supplied more militants to extremist groups such as the ISIL in Syria and Iraq than any other Western nation, according to information from Radio Free Europe.
According to an infograph published by the broadcaster, Britain has provided 2,000 militants to the terrorist groups.
The figure which is based on intelligence estimates is even larger than the number of extremists who have joined ISIL from non-Western countries like Morocco and Turkey.
The British government offers a more conservative figure of ‘at least 600′.
The report comes as London has joined the US-led military campaign against ISIL militants in Iraq and Syria and British officials say they will not tolerate any support for the terrorist group at home.
However, Islamic activist and political commentator Shabbir Hassanally who believes the US, British and other Western governments are behind the chaos in Syria and Iraq said he is “not surprised” that Britain is the main contributor to ISIL group.
“Britain is one of those that is behind all of this,” Hassanally said in an interview with Press TV.
Referring to incidents where ISIL supporters in England appear freely in public places with T-Shirts bearing the ISIL logo on it, Hassanally called it a clear sign of “double standards” and warned that “prevalence of Takfiri mentality can be seen everywhere.”
Saudi Arabia and Tunisia have the highest number of contribution to the terrorist groups with an estimate of 3,000 militants, according to the figure.
Radio Free Europe claims that its figures are amalgamated from governments around Europe and the world, think tanks, and Reuters news agency.
The station notes that where a range of estimates for the number of fighters has been provided, it has opted for the highest available option.
Back in October, the United Nations Security Council warned in a report that 15,000 foreigners had flocked to Iraq and Syria to join extremist groups such as the ISIL.
