Despite Britain tackling acid rain, it is now failing to respond in a similar way against a new generation of pollution threats, according to the study from the government’s respected Natural Environment Research Council (NERC).
Acid rain has been an environmental hazard in Britain and other northern European countries for decades. It caused a wide range of problems for years until the 1980s and 1990s, from forests stripped of leaves and polluted waterways endangering to fish and other wildlife.
Efforts to cut emissions of nitrogen oxides are taking place, though the amount of extra nitrogen put in the atmosphere has hardly made a difference in the past two decades, which could be affecting biodiversity.
Scientific estimates addressed that the amount of metals deposited in Britain’s atmosphere, is far larger than it should be. The report said the amount of certain metals in the atmosphere was 10 times what it should be.
