BP to pay £4.9bn over Gulf oil spill

The under fire UK oil giant is to pay to the individuals, hoteliers, shrimpers and oystermen and other business owners along the Gulf Coast who were hit by the worst oil spill in the history of the US.

The agreement is predicted to be supported in the City of London on Monday.

Bob Dudley, BP’s chief executive, said, “From the beginning, BP stepped up to meet our obligations to the communities in the Gulf Coast region and we’ve worked hard to deliver on that commitment for nearly two years.”

He also stressed that the planned settlement demonstrated major progress toward resolving issues from the Deepwater Horizon incident and contributing more to economic and environmental restoration attempts along the Gulf Coast.

BP said that the agreement was “not an admission of liability.” Adding that the £4.9 billion will derive from £12.6bn compensation fund that was set up after the 2010 oilrig explosion. The company, headquartered in London, has already paid £4.7 billion for the clean-up costs and compensation.

The Deepwater Horizon rig blasted in the Gulf of Mexico off Louisiana in April 2010, killing 11 workers and discharging over 200 million gallons of oil from BP’s undersea well.

The unrelenting flow of oil into the water has polluted the southern US beaches and devastated the region’s fishing and tourism industries, which according to experts, will take years to recover.
