Boy run over by ride-on mower at Lyndhurst

UPDATE 4.25pm: THE distressed family of a four-year-old boy run over by his father on a ride-on lawnmower is waiting to hear the details of his condition, a relative says.

The lawnmower is believed to have reversed over the boy, with the spinning blades severely injuring his lower abdomen and upper legs. He remained in a serious condition in hospital this afternoon.

Family member Paul Purcell said the boy’s family lived at the Van Wyk Flowers farm in Lyndhurst, in Melbourne’s southeast.

“They’d obviously be very distraught,” Mr Purcell said.

“We’re still not aware of the extent of things, so we’re just waiting.”

An ambulance helicopter called to the property after 5pm yesterday flew the distressed boy to the Royal Children’s Hospital in a serious condition.

Paramedic Andrew Burns said the boy’s injuries were “horrific”.

“We were told the boy was behind the ride-on lawnmower when it reversed and he went under it,” said Mr Burns.

“It’s probably fortunate that the heat of the lawnmower blade actually helped seal some of the damaged blood vessels and reduce the severity of the bleeding.”

r Burns said the distressed boy was given pain relief through a nasal spray.

“Once he settled we were able to put a needle in his arm and give him some more pain relief and some intravenous fluids to help stabilise his blood pressure,” he said

Ambulance Victoria spokesman Ray Rowe said paramedics were unsure why the boy was at the business, believed to be plant growers.

“Why the child was there, I don’t know, but certainly the paramedics did a great job,” Mr Rowe said.

“They were working on the child at the scene for some time.”

The boy was flown by ambulance helicopter to the Royal Children’s Hospital in a serious condition.

The incident comes two months after a 16-month-old boy was run over by a lawnmower on his family’s property at Maryknoll, southeast of Melbourne, severely injuring his right arm and cutting his legs and foot.
