A nine-year-old boy has died after a blaze tore through a family home in the early hours of the morning.

Two girls, aged three and four, are being treated in hospital after the fire at the terraced property in Kilmarnock, Scotland.

Rescue teams found the children – who are all related – on the upper floor after fighting through ‘intense heat and
thick acrid smoke’ to reach them.

Fire crews were called to the
property at around 3.19am today after ‘numerous’ 999 calls.

They found a ‘well developed’
fire on both floors of the two-storey building and were told that people may still be inside.

After rescuing the children they gave them trauma care for varying degrees of smoke inhalation until paramedics took over.

All of the windows were covered in black soot and one appeared to have come off its hinges.

The youngsters were then taken to Crosshouse Hospital, in Kilmarnock, where the young boy died, but the girls are said to be in a stable condition.

The boy’s mother was named locally as
Cherie McGill, but the children took their father’s last name who, it is
understood, no longer lives with the family.

The dead boy, who has not been named,
was the eldest child, he had three younger sisters and a three-year-old
brother, according to neighbours.

Area Commander Ally Boyle said: ‘If it hadn’t been for the courage and determination of our crews, what is a tragic incident could have been worse.’

He added: ‘Our thoughts and prayers are with the boy’s family at this sad time.’

One fire crew remained at the scene along with police officers.
Engineers from ScottishPower worked in the front garden to cut off power supplies to allow fire officers to carry out their investigation.

Neighbours on Altonhill Avenue, in the northern part of the town, described their shock at the young boy’s death.

Chris Wears, 31, who has lived in the
area for seven years, said his niece was in the same class as the boy
at Mount Carmel Primary School.

He said: ‘It’s such a terrible thing to happen especially at this time of year.
‘It is a real shock for the area.

‘I had seen him about and he was a lovely wee boy. I don’t know how the family will be coping.’

Strathclyde Fire and Rescue’s specialist
fire investigation team will carry out a joint investigation with
Strathclyde Police to determine the cause of the fire.

Yet another fire, this is very sad,but no mention of the parents, where they there? are they ok

Fifty years ago house fires like this happened several times a week – through chip pan fires, smoking in bed, coal fires, a complete lack of smoke detectors etc. Nowadays we’ve all been so thoroughly educated about fire risks that it makes me angry and upset that children are still dying needlessly. Sometimes fires start through electrical faults, but surely smoke detectors warn you in time to get out?
We need a community effort. If you know anyone with little children and no smoke detector, buy them one and fit it for them! They cost less than a tenner and it could be the best thing you ever do.
