Two children have been hit by a passenger train at a railway crossing near Ballarat, in western Victoria.
A THREE-year-old boy is fighting for his life after he was hit by a country passenger train while playing near railway tracks in Victoria.
A Country Fire Authority spokeswoman said two children were “clipped” by the Ballarat-bound train close to Wallace station, west of Melbourne, about 11.20am (AEDT) today.
The boy was trapped under the V/Line train for more than an hour before being freed, while a four-year-old girl received a head injury, bruising, swelling around her eye and a cut to her leg.
The boy, believed to live locally, was placed in an induced coma and flown to the Royal Children’s Hospital.
He remains in a critical condition with head, chest and abdominal injuries.
The four-year-old girl was taken to hospital in a stable condition for assessment.
Paramedic Colin Carty said the girl was conscious at the time of the accident.
“We aren’t sure exactly how she was injured, but on the face of it, the injuries don’t appear to be too severe,” he said.
The train driver was treated for severe shock.
Passengers on the train were transferred to coaches two hours after the accident.
Services on the line in both directions have resumed.
