“I don’t want to sound jingoistic, but if you do wish to come and drink
soda from a 16 ounce pot, come to London. Bring your huddled masses yearning
to break free.
“We now have this collective advantage that you are just mentioned in
our more laissez faire approach to soft drinks.”
Adopting a more serious tone, Mr Johnson said he appreciated the logic behind
Mr Bloomberg’s proposal, which has been met largely with widespread ridicule
in the States.
The London Mayor said: “The reality is we are all getting fatter. It is a
problem in a city like London and it is a problem in New York.
“If you can stop kids getting fatter by restricting the size of the coke
they drink then why not?”
Later Mr Johnson spoke of his admiration for Mr Bloomberg and even suggested
he run for President.
He told the audience: “I am a great fan of Mayor Bloomberg. I don’t see
why he has ruled himself of for the presidency. That is my view. I think he
would be a great candidate.”
Earlier in the show Mr Stewart, famed for his satire, made light of the news
that The Prime Minister David Cameron had accidentally left his
eight-year-old daughter Nancy alone in a pub after leaving without her.
“Say what you like about the Secret Service messing around with
Colombian prostitutes. You know what they never did … left Malia in an
Applebees,” he said, referring to President Obama’s daughter and the
popular US pub chain.
Mr Stewart also suggested London could be the “Amsterdam of Mountain Dew”.
Mr Johnson’s appearance on the show was his latest on the US talk show circuit
to promote his book, Johnson’s Life of London: the People Who Made the City
that Made the World.
Last week he appeared on the David Letterman show where he was asked how long
he had been cutting his own hair.
Mr Johnson also told the audience that, because he had been born in New York,
he could “technically” be president for the USA.
