Bones Found in "Haunted" Ohio Hotel

Emmitt House Waverly, Ohio — A hunt for ghosts at a Southern Ohio landmark turned up bones that are now part of a police investigation.

Waverly Police said they were called to the century-old Emmitt House downtown after bones were found in the basement during a search by a medium and a group of experts in paranormal activity. The medium said she “sensed” the presence of bones at the historic hotel/restaurant, and then discovered them under some stones.

The Emmitt House — which closed this spring — has long had a reputation as a haunted building among workers and community members.

Bob Dixon, who owns a jewelry store across the street from the Emmitt House, said he is hesitant to believe in the spirits, but also said there are some credible people who claim they have had contact with ghosts on the property.

“I know some previous employees who are convinced they have seen spirits on many occasions,” Dixon said. “Recently, employees would not go into the basement themselves simply because of the fear of what they might see or fear.”

The bones have been examined by two county coroners, and Police Chief Larry Roe said he will have an anthropologist view them as well. So far, Roe said the experts think the bones are non-human. If the anthropologist has doubts, Roe said he will take the bones to a state lab.

The owners of the building, Charly and Bill Weil, are thinking about turning the site into a paranormal attraction. Charly Weil told ABC 6/FOX 28 that she believes there are spirits haunting the Emmitt House, and thinks they could be there because the place was a stop on the old Underground Railroad.
