Bondi diners make citizens’ arrest

Customers at a restaurant in Sydney’s east have made a citizens’ arrest after a man allegedly threatened and demanded money from pedestrians.

In the incident just before 10pm on Friday, a man allegedly made the demands on two separate occasions near the Woollahra eatery.

“During the second incident it is alleged the man struggled with the pedestrian before chasing him into a restaurant, allegedly punching him twice in the back of the head,” police said in a statement.

“Customers in the restaurant saw the incident and held the man until police arrived.”

They said an 18-year-old Bondi man was placed under arrest and taken to Waverley Police Station for questioning.

“It is alleged he drove a stolen motor scooter, which was located at the scene and that he allegedly threatened a police officer,” the statement said.

He was charged with two counts of assault with intent to rob, one count of take and drive conveyance, one count of assault and once count of intimidate police officer.

The man was refused bail to appear in Parramatta Bail Court on Saturday.
